Bellsouth.net iPhone 3G Email Setup Issues

You probably assumed, as I did, that since AT&T a.k.a. Bellsouth (also previously a.k.a. Cingular Wireless, Bellsouth Mobility, Mama Bell, etc) was the current exclusive carrier for the iPhone, that there would be an email setup shortcut provided similar to the ones included for Gmail & Yahoo Mail.

I was able to set up a Gmail account with no problem. It was a piece of cake. The Exchange setup was equally easy. Then came the Bellsouth.net account setup. That's where I ended up spending a good chunk of time on the phone on hold waiting for a rep.

Once I did reach someone, they were aware of the issue and quickly gave the info how to set up the account. I asked how could they forget to include their existing old school customers in the iPhone email setup shortcuts. Didn't get a response.

My iPhone is rocking now. Very easy to manage multiple mailboxes. As long as I have battery life that is...

I finally got mine set up by calling myiphone, but here you go.

1. mail account, add account
2. other
3. your name, youremail@bellsouth.net, your password
4. "wait, wait, wait, wait!!!"
5. "yes" when asked about SSL
6. when it say's it can't connect to SMTP
7. Now a screen is visible with your Bellsouth info
8. change smtp to cmwx.com with no username or passord, and hit save
9. wait, wait, wait!

The key is to "wait" it takes a long time. This is where I was stopping and cancelling, but it takes a "Long" time. After the account is set up it is fast to connect.

Thanks for the comment. When you say "long", you weren't kidding. I had to keep tapping the screen to keep it from turning off and pausing it.

I was at the cusp of losing my patience....then again...maybe i was beyond it waiting for this thing to work.

In my setup, i had a step before it asked about SSL. it was "SMTP account verification failed..." and you can only choose "OK"

What do you have to do to get secondary accounts set up on the iPhone 3G with BellSouth? Do they require"cmwx.com" or what? I cannot get secondary accounts to work. Help, please!
